BILLIONAIRE, serial entrepreneur and Chief Executive Officer of Mars One, Bas Lansdorp, will head up an array of guest speakers at a conference in Durban where he will talk about his plan to land the first humans on Mars in 2032.

Lansdorp is set to speak at the South African Council of Shopping Centres (SACSC) Annual Congress next month.

The 41-year-old from the Netherlands has a passion for ambitious projects and is convinced he can send people on a one-way ticket to Mars, to inhabit the Red Planet.

The Mars One co-founder will be sharing his thoughts and plans at the conference.

Mars One, a Dutch NPO, has a renowned advisory board which includes a former NASA Chief Technologist, an astronaut, and a Nobel prize laureate.

With several completed feasibility studies by Lockheed Martin Space Systems Company and Paragon Space Development Corporation, Mars One Foundation has built a firm basis on which to continue its mission.

Lansdorp will discuss Mars exploration and the feasibility of the mission of permanent settlement.

He will also explain the business model for a manned mission to Mars and the complexities of finding a crew of four that can leave their friends, family and planet behind to settle on Mars.

With a masters of science degree in mechanical engineering, Lansdorp spent five years on PhD research into wind energy.

After abandoning this research, Lansdorp formed his first company, Ampyx Power, which develops a novel, cheaper-than-coal, method of wind energy generation.

He sold part of his shares in Ampyx Power to finance the start of Mars One.

Under the theme ‘Game Changers’, this year’s SACSC conference will feature a number of game changing speakers and industry leaders.
