It’s hard not to feel connected to powerful matriarchs that you see on the small screen regularly. Their trials and tribulations become part of our own lives, we learn so much from their mishaps, we laugh at their embarrassing moments and celebrate their victories. These TV mums become almost like our own mothers in a parallel universe whether we’d like to admit it or not. Here are some of the most memorable ones that have won many hearts in recent times.
1. Marge Simpson
Marjorie Jacqueline “Marge” Simpson is probably one of the most iconic TV mums in history. She has broken new ground as one of the most lovable characters in the longest running animated TV show The Simpsons. For 29 seasons we have watched Marge play the long suffering wife who has to deal with the antics of her husband and three children. She has a strong moral compass and in many ways has represented stay-at-home moms and their problems for decades. She’s a lesson to us all on what it takes to be a super-mum maintaining strong relationships with her children as well as her husband, mother and sisters.
2. Selina Meyer
She might not be the best mum in the world but Vice President Selina Meyer has won so many hearts for her consistent battles to get to the top job in US public office in HBO TV show Veep. She speaks her mind, is hilarious, smart, beautiful and powerful. Her role, played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus, shows just how challenging it is for women to reach and maintain a spot in political office in a world of misogynists and still be a good mother. Her maternal instincts are less desirable but her acceptance of her daughter’s sexuality, her unwavering ambition and fierce independence are definitely inspirational.
3. Charmaine Beukes
Charmaine Beukes, played by Vinette Ebrahim is one of the most recognisable moms on South African TV. She’s gone through so many ups and downs with her relationships and has been dealt a few blows in her life but still maintains a warm heart through it all. She lives for her business, Oppiekoffie, is an amazing cook, and a down-to-earth person ready to help anyone in need. We can’t imagine TV without Charmaine, one of the last standing matriarchs in South African soapies.
4. Mkabayi Zungu
AK47 wielding Mkabayi Zungu is a tough-talking strong matriarch that gets involved in the politics of the taxi industry in the popular TV show Isibaya. She is an unforgettable force who doesn’t take nonsense from anyone. Who can forget the time when she joined the men on the streets with guns during the episodes highlighting taxi violence? She was ready to show her enemies exactly how powerful she is and the lengths she is willing to go to, to protect her family and business.
5. Cersei Lannister
The devious widow of King Robert Baratheon and Queen of the Seven Kingdoms is probably one of the fiercest queens we have seen on recent television. The daughter of Lord Tywin Lannister has been through it all and is the epitome of a strong woman who will do anything to protect her family and legacy. Inspite of her unconventional relationships with her siblings, Cersei remains the foundation of the Lannister family even after her children have been killed, and after she is tortured and imprisoned. She embodies the saying “You strike a woman, you strike a rock”.
