ST Catherine’s School learners Shalomé Landman and Sarah Giles are going to have an awesome holiday overseas as part of the Rotary International Youth Exchange Programme.

The pair hosted two students from Hessen, Germany and Vienna, Austria earlier this year for six weeks and will now be hosted by their families in return from 2 December to 14 January.

Landman will jet off to Germany, where she will be hosted by the Lenhardt family, where she will attend school with daughter Saskia before spending the holidays with her new friend’s family.

‘I love travelling and want to go into tourism one day,’ said the Grade 9 pupil.

‘I have been overseas before, but this will be my first time in Germany and I can’t wait to experience the culture and local cuisine.’

The 15-year-old is also excited to catch up with Saskia after bonding in June and July.

Giles will head to Austria to visit the Brandstätter family, who have many plans for the 17-year-old.

‘I will attend school with Marlise and then go on a weekend tour with other exchange students,’ said the Grade 11 pupil.

‘I’ll then attend some concerts before going skiing with the family for two weeks.

Giles hopes to learn more about herself and the Austrian way of life

‘To experience it first hand and not as a tourist is exciting for me.’

The exchange programme has short-term or long-term options.

The short-term option runs for six weeks during which the student is hosted by one family for the entire period.

The long-term programme runs for a year and students are hosted by a number of different families in the same area.

To apply for the exchange programme, one needs to contact the nearest Rotary Club.

Hopefuls must be under 21 years of age for the short-term option and under 18 for the long-term programme.

The Rotary Club will interview the applicant and put forward their selections before February next year.

After the selection process, the applicant will be notified on the result and will then attend two orientation sessions as preparation.

Anyone interested in the programme can contact Rotarian Denise Brooke on 083 3246045.
