N2 Mtunzini-to-Empangeni upgrade completion due in 2019

Construction taking place along the left side of the N2 between the Mtunzini toll plaza and the Empangeni T-junction

THE upgrading of the N2, between Mtunzini toll plaza and the Empangeni T-junction at Canefields, is behind schedule by two months, but is still on track to be completed by early 2019.

Corne Roux, South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) Eastern Region Project Manager, provided the ZO with a detailed progress report this week regarding the upgrade of the 33km stretch, which is still in the construction phase.

‘Since commencement in February 2016 there has been steady progress with construction of the new northbound carriageway.

‘This included construction of fill and pavement layers, extension of numerous culverts and agricultural overpass structures and the installation of pilings, the construction of piers and the construction of the bridge decks for the new Mhlatuze and Mlalazi river bridges as well as for the Empangeni/Richards Bay interchange bridge,’ said Roux.
