Four King Cetshwayo district schools affected by storm

FOUR schools in the King Cetshwayo District have been affected by the storm that ravaged KZN on Tuesday.

The schools, which have not yet been named, are among 42 schools in the province that reported damage.

This brings the total number of schools damaged by recent storms in the province to more than 350.

‘Several schools had to suspend teaching owing to storm damage. We are still trying to establish the exact number of schools that have been affected,’ said KZN Education MEC spokesperson Kwazi Mthethwa.

‘Our district officials are working with schools to try and assess the extent of the damage. Some schools have already reported water damage to classrooms‚ fallen trees, broken fences and roof damage.’

Technical assessments will determine the repair costs.

The Zululand, uThukela and iLembe districts are waiting for the submission of the list of schools identified.

‘Once we have managed to collate all necessary information we will give an update.

‘Such cases will be handed over to the Department of Public Works for repairs. We will have to prioritise damages that affect the core functioning of schools.’ said Mthethwa.

With just a few days to go before the matric exams, the department said it wanted to ensure that schools are operational as soon as possible.
