BREAKING: Man drowns off Sodwana Bay

NSRI Richards Bay Station 19 was alerted by iSimangaliso Wetland Park staff

A MAN tragically lost his life yesterday (Wednesday) after getting into difficulty in the surf off Sodwana Bay.

It is reported that the 36-year-old man, originally from Pretoria but living in London, was on holiday at Sodwana with his family.

‘Just before 2pm, NSRI Richards Bay was alerted by iSimangaliso Wetland Park staff that a man was missing in the surf at Jesser Point,’ said NSRI Richards Bay Station Commander, Dorian Robertson.

He reportedly got into difficulty and was swept out to sea by rip currents.

‘The man had been snorkelling in the water with a friend when they were caught in strong rip currents.

‘The friend was able to reach the shore, and he raised the alarm.

‘iSimangaliso personnel, a Coral Divers boat, a Sodwana Bay Lodge Scuba Centre boat, and rescue divers from both were engaged in an extensive search and rescue operation, including free dive and sea-and-shoreline searches.’

A SAPS search and rescue squad was also activated and the Transnet National Ports Authority helicopter was placed on alert.

‘The extensive search continued after dark, and, at low tide early this morning (Thursday), shore patrols were conducted.

‘At first light, the SAPS search and rescue squad conducted a free dive search, and the man’s body was located and recovered.’

Police have opened an inquest docket.
