Mzingazi mother arrested for abandoning baby

A MOTHER was arrested for abandoning her baby after she left her 10-month-old infant with a traditional healer in Mzingazi since July.

The woman, taken into custody on Monday, reportedly left the baby boy with her neighbour under the pretense that she was going to the shop to purchase infant formula, but she never returned.

She was renting a room in Mzingazi and on a previous occasion had left her child with the neighbour and returned a week later.

When she failed to collect her baby after several weeks, the traditional healer contacted Mzingazi Community Policing Forum representative Sharon Mdletshe for assistance.

The baby was taken to the Richards Bay SAPS trauma room on Monday and the mother was located and arrested later that day.

Mdletshe said the neighbour had been taking care of the infant while the mother had disappeared, but she was gone for over a month and was concerned.

‘I informed the community of the consequences of taking care of other people’s children and the proper channels were followed to ensure the baby’s safety.’

‘I always advise community members who are left in such situations to contact the police immediately for assistance,’ said Mdletshe.

The baby has been placed in foster care and the mother appeared in the Richards Bay Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday and and the case was remanded until Wednesday.
