EMPANGENI High School’s Joshua Boa-Amponsem hopes to showcase his scientific skills and abilities when he demonstrates his ‘atmospheric condenser’ machine at the Eskom Expo competition next month.

The matriculant was recently selected to represent EHS at the national event which will take place in Boksburg.

Joshua said he showcased his design to his science teacher, who then submitted a summary of what his invention can do to Eskom.

‘It basically extracts moisture from the air to make water. It took me about a week to complete.

‘I used everyday household goods to create the machine because I didn’t have a lot of money to go out and buy material.

‘It is a conceptual design that can work in dry conditions, but works best in humid conditions – much like Empangeni,’ he laughed.

He said he hopes his design will impress the judges – one of which is EHS teacher Mr S Buthelezi who was selected as a national judge for the competition.

Not only is Joshua into academics, he is also and avid athletics competitor in triple jump and long jump, as well as captain of EHS’ first hockey team.

Down to earth and humble, Joshua told the ZO that he has always had an interest in inventing things and quickly learned that science can assist in his designs.

He hopes to study mechatronics at the Univeristy of Cape Town (UCT) next year.
