Tough tale inspires all women

CONNED at the tender age of 21 into becoming a drug dealer’s mule and ending up in a Thai prison, Vanessa Goosen has come to learn that forgiveness is the only key to internal peace.
As women around the country mark the day that is their own – Women’s Day – the ladies from Mhlathuze Water gathered to hear a particularly inspiring talk from the woman who for 16 years lived a nightmare and emerged a pillar of strength.
Vanessa was speaking on Tuesday to her rivetted audience at the Umfolozi Protea hotel near Mtubatuba. ‘This is what I am bringing to these ladies today, that without forgiveness and letting go of past experiences, you can never have peace,’ said Vanessa.
‘We all go through dark and difficult situations but it is so important for us to remember that, while we may not have a choice in what we go through, we do have a choice in how we react to it and whether or not we use difficult situations to strengthen ourselves and better our lives.’
Vanessa said that sharing and speaking about her experiences hence helped her healing process, so she encourages other women to do the same.
‘I aim to bring hope to women, to inspire them to never give up regardless of the situation in which they find themselves, and to focus on forgiveness. ‘When you do not forgive, you hurt only yourself.
‘Women are wives, mothers, daughters and working women. Our roles are diverse but we hold it together and I try to show women that what is on the inside is most important of all.
‘It is easy to put on our make-up and best dresses but if we are broken and negative on the inside, we will attract the same to us.
‘For me, Women’s Day is about ladies coming together to uplift and strengthen each other, to recognise each other’s successes and to carry each other through tough times, not to criticise or break each other down.’
Now a seasoned motivational and inspirational speaker, Vanessa has made it her life’s ambition to help women make the most of what they have and recognise the inner strength that will carry them through the dark times.
