It’s all about dancing

LOCAL dance instructor Santos Mkhabela has used his love for dancing to create a platform for young aspiring dancers to enhance their dancing skills and talent.

The owner of Strictly Dancing, a dance school specialising in different genres such as street, local, afro, hip hop and robot, opened his school earlier this year at the CROSSFIT Richards Bay premises near Lakeside Mall with 10 students.

With dancing taking centre stage for most of his life, Santos believes he was born to dance and is working towards his dream of one-day owning his own dance studio.

‘I began dancing at school concerts and was a great fan of the late Michael Jackson. I followed this amazing artist and I perfected his dance moves to the point where I was known in my suburb, Aquadene, as ‘ MJ of the hood’.

‘With a few of my friends in high school, we opened our first dance crew ‘The Stunners’ and took our town by storm.

‘We were called to open at several events such as Mafikizolo and DJ Sbu.’

As study commitments began to take its toll in high school, the group went their separate ways, but Santos continued with his performances.

In December the 28-year-old married his sweetheart Toni and surprised their wedding guests with a show-stopping dance performance which ignited his dream of opening a dance school.

‘This is my gift from God and one of my goals has always been to teach my gift to anyone that shared a passion for dance.

‘I do not have any formal dance training, but in February I took my leap of faith and started this dance school with the support of Paul Botha and Michelle Green of CROSSFIT Richards Bay,who provided the venue for my classes.

‘Dance is not just about moving your body, but it is a form of therapy which allows you to lose all your negative emotions and move to the beat of your heart,’ said Santos.

They have a Facebook page ‘STRICTLY DANCING and Santos can be contacted on 078 6807510.
