Grantleigh girls’ hockey team on a mission

Grantleigh first team players Carmen Singery, Minnie Nkosi, Tessa Hubble, Stephany Anselmo, Sajana Nagessur and Danielle van Onselen are ready for the upcoming grand finals of the Spar KZN School Girls' Hockey Challenge

GRANTLEIGH girls hockey coach Garth Bishop and his squad are geared up to make the semi-finals at the grand finals of the Spar KZN School Girls’ Hockey Challenge on 29 and 30 July at St Mary’s DSG.

This is a big ask for the local team. They finished eighth on the two previous occasions they competed in 2011 and 2016.

They will come up against some stiff competition when facing the other regional winners.

The 10 competing teams will be split into two pools, playing 20-minute one-way games, with four points being awarded for a win, two points for a draw with goals and a single point for a goalless draw.

Durban Girls College will head into the competition as favourites, being the only side to have made all seven finals, racking up three consecutive golds, two silvers and a fourth place.

Grantleigh have been placed in Pool A alongside defending champions St Mary’s DSG, St Anne’s College, Wartburg Kirchdorf School and Our Lady of Fatima.

Overseeing the games will be a handful of up-and-coming umpires selected at the various regional tournaments, together with more experienced whistle blowers who will act as mentors.

Brett Braithwaite, who won the Most Promising Umpire award at the North Coast regional, will join the Grantleigh girls at the tournament.
