Rhinos secure vital home victory

INSIDE centre Thokozani Mdluli scored a hat-trick of tries to lead the winning charge for Mancosa Rhinos in their Fidelity Security Moor Cup match against Newcastle Highlanders at Mick Kelly Park on Saturday afternoon.

Mdluli found his way to the whitewash twice in the first half and once in the second to set up his side’s vital 24-15 win.

Head coach Charles Mndaweni and his men were under pressure, finding themselves in a must win situation after having gone down to South Coast Warriors the week before.

But a fully loaded side hungry to perform came out and proved unstoppable.

Things were tight in the first half, but Rhinos took a 12-5 lead into the half-time break thanks to Mdluli’s two tries and a conversion by Jors Dannhauser.

Rhinos came out firing in the second half, which resulted in two more tries and an eventual bonus point victory.

The local outfit played a running, attacking game, which Newcastle battled to stop.

Outside centre Siphosethu Ngwalala crossed the chalk first for an unconverted try, before Mdluli’s third run-in which Dannhauser converted.

Twin brother Thulani Mdluli picked up a yellow card for cynical play, but this did not hinder the home side’s performance as Newcastle failed to take advantage.

In the earlier game, Rhinos 2 went down 20-17 to Newcastle in a closely contested game which saw the visitors slot a dropgoal in the last move of play.

Both sides will head back to the drawing board this week as they prepare to host Jaguars on Saturday at Mick Kelly Park.

Kick-off is scheduled for 2pm and 3.30pm.

If the Rhinos beat Jaguars, then their Premiership status should remain intact for next season with one game in hand.

Richards Bay

Richards Bay hosted Durban Collegians on Saturday in their Fidelity Security Moor Cup match-up.

The second side lost 0-90 with the first side going down 19-10 to the Durban-based club.

Richards Bay will have a break this weekend before hosting Crusaders at the Richards Bay Rugby Club on Friday, 14 July in their next assignment.

Kick-off for those games are 7pm and 8.30pm.
