Life sentences for two Nongoma robbers

TWO men have been convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment at the Mtunzini High Court for murder, and an additional 15 years for robbery.

Mduduzi Luthuli (35) and Simiso Ndebele (32) robbed stokvel members and killed Thoko Dorack Hlathswayo in the Ezimangweni area near Nongoma.

‘On 5 December 2015 seven stokvel members were busy counting stokvel money in a house when they were approached by two suspects at gunpoint.

‘Hlatshlwayo (57) was shot and killed and the suspects took R78 000 from the house and fled the scene,’ KZN police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbhele said.

Community members apprehended one of the suspects and handed him over to the police.

‘The police traced the second accused, who was arrested two days later after. He was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

Both accused were charged with murder and robbery, while a charge of possession of an unlicensed firearm was added to Luthuli,’ Mbhele said.

Luthuli was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment on that charge.
