KwaDukuza Mayor takes on the drugs fight

KwaDukuza Mayor Ricardo Mthembu - declaring war against drugs and substance abuse

THE fight against drugs and other substance abuse should not only involve law enforcement agencies, but knowledge and resources from the business community, religious groups, medical practitioners and community members.

This was the opinion of KwaDukuza Municipality Mayor Ricardo Mthembu at a drugs and substance abuse indaba last week.

The indaba was convened by the municipality to reflect on the state of drugs and substance abuse plaguing the local community.

Mthembu noted that while illicit drugs remained a matter being dealt with by law enforcement agencies, he felt that it was not enough as the rapid spread of new addicts continued to prevail in KwaDukuza and surrounding areas.

‘The message must be clear to all. Enough is enough. Drug lords will no longer be tolerated and we are no longer willing to accept lawlessness. We therefore need a collective approach to deal with this scourge.

‘Everyone must play a role in the fight against crime and drug peddling to promote social cohesion and nation building.

‘We will convene a discussion to zoom in on drug issues and make key policy proposals as part of intensifying the fight against drugs, even if it means we have to introduce draconian measures to fight substance abuse. Decisive steps are called for.

‘There is also agreement that the establishment of a rehabilitation centre is a matter to be investigated by Council, working together with key stakeholders and this should be finalised by June,’ Mthembu said.
