THE Abundant Life Centre (TALC) church building situated at the Huberta Hall in Richards Bay was gutted in the early hours of Sunday morning, when a fire broke out and destroyed the premises and its equipment.

While the cause of the fire is yet to be determined, the centre’s Pastor Ivan Naidoo said the premises internal alarm had been activated after 5am, but the external beams had not been triggered.

The alarm company responded to the call and found smoke billowing from the building.

‘We rushed to the scene and the building was already engulfed in flames; my son Javan attempted to go inside but the smoke was overpowering.

Very little was left after the fire was extinguished

‘The Fire and Rescue Services arrived quickly on scene and while the sound system and other equipment had melted beyond recognition, we were able to salvage our chairs, which will need to be washed and dry cleaned.

‘We will rise out of the ashes and despite this incident we will continue with our services even if we meet in a tent or in the car park for a while.

‘The church is never determined by a building because we (people) are the church; this building is a physical structure and can be restored.

‘The community have offered us their assistance in restoring the house of the Lord and we are so appreciative,’ said Naidoo.
