THE Zululand Businesswomen’s Association (BWA) held its 18th Annual General Meeting at the Bayshore Inn on Friday.

The meeting, providing an update on the organisation’s achievements over the past year, was attended by businesswomen and professionals, some of them long-standing members.

Chairperson Elaine Chetty, who took over the helm in mid-2016, announced that although the organisation was faced with challenges in 2016, membership grew by 47%.

She acknowledged the team for the hard work in leading the organisation to great heights.

‘An organisation this strong has a team that leads it and I was fortunate enough to step into a team that helped me every step of the way,’ Chetty said.

Guest speaker, Economic Development and Business Strategist Nompumelelo Ndlela, applauded the women in the BWA for the work they do to empower others.

‘There are a lot of success stories in the BWA and I am one of them,’ Ndlela said.

‘I joined the BWA in 2007 with an entrepreneurial spirit, but I did not know much about it. I had the urge to be creative and make something happen. I was also eager to learn,’ she said.

Ndlela spoke of the role of women in sustainable economic development.

‘The inclusvity of women in economic development is beyond race and politics. It’s not even about one’s background, it’s about where we are going. We have dreams.’

She said it was not enough to just position women in the corporate environment. They need to go out and obtain the necessary skills to be successful entrepreneurs.

‘We need to understand the succession plan, we need women to empower themselves to trade in the economy.’

CEO of Ingqapheli security company, Makhosi Mthiyane, said she thrives to give women opportunity.

‘I personally believe in empowering others and giving women the space to grow into their own successes,’ Mthiyane said.
