Thanda Royal Zulu still have points to prove

WHILE they are already winners of the National First Division and their promotion to the PSL is done and dusted, Thanda Royal Zulu still have a job to do in their final fixture on Sunday.

They will want to end the season on a high note prior to receiving the trophy.

After their 4-0 victory against FC Cape Town on Wednesday, a win away to Real Kings will see them to 62 points for the season – a new league record.

Added to that, Mhlengi Cele has the chance to top the division’s goal scoring list.

Given that Real Kings were thumped 6-0 by second from bottom Magesi on Wednesday (how did that happen?), Cele must be relishing the opportunity.

But the real interest lies in the teams fighting to make the play-offs for the second PSL place.

This is contested by three clubs: the two that finish second and third in the NFD, and the club that finishes 15th in the Absa Premiership (16th is automatically relegated).

The play-offs are contested in a league format (three points for a win), on a home and away basis.

The dates are: 31 May, 3 June, 7 June, 10 June, 14 June and 17 June.

With the finals league games all on Sunday, there are still four NFD teams still in the running: Black Leopards (50), AmaZulu (47), Stellenbosch (46) and Royal Eagles (45).

Leopards will find Mthatha Bucks a tough opponent; AmaZulu should find it easier against FC Cape Town; Stellenbosch should beat relegated Santos by some margin; Royal Eagles have work to do to sink Witbank Spurs.
