Barnard powers in to claim top honours in Richards Bay mountain bike race

A GOOD turnout of well over 200 mountain bike riders sweated it out at the annual Richards Bay Christian School’s mountain bike race in Richards Bay on Saturday morning.

Sponsored by The Spares Shop, Zululand Cycling Club, Lakeside Mall, Chubb, Leaf Technologies and Midbay Motors, races were completed over 10km, 25km and 50km routes.

Dirk Barnard, who recently completed the 105km section of the aQuelle Tour Durban in 2.45.12, carried his form into this event to be the first man home in the 50km race in 1.48.41.

Nardus Uys puts in a strong finish

He recorded a 2min 26sec lead over second placed Samuel Erasmus, who finished in 1.51.07.

Ronnie Ackerman won a sprint finish against Eugene Fourie to claim the 25km title by a split second, with a time of 53.09.

Wian Diedericks completes the 10km ride

Youngster Tyrin van Rooyen put pedal to the metal to win the 10km race in a blistering 30.48.

Most riders used this event as preparation for the upcoming Big 5 Series that starts this weekend.


10km U18

Boys – 1 Tyrin van Rooyen 30.48, 2 Julian Erasmus 35.27, 3 Jamie Triggiani 36.12.

Girls – 1 Kirsten Pretorius 36.04, 2 Kyla Trollip 40.29, 3 Gwen Farland 46.32.

Daniel Titus worked hard the entire morning, bringing home the podium riders in all three events


Men – 1 Ronnie Ackerman 53.09, 2 Eugene Fourie 53.10, 3 Mbongi Ndlovu 53.16.

Women – 1 Marie de Jager 1.07.18, 2 Johanna Pienaar 1.08.13, 3 Bronwyn Wissekerke 1.11.57.

Men – 1 Dirk Barnard 1.48.41, 2 Samuel Erasmus 1.51.07, 3 Rupert Searle 2.03.05.

Women – 1 Desiree Verwey 2.04.11, 2 Telaine Grobler 2.28.29, 3 Karen Dalton 2.29.10.
