Ulundi to host football tournament

Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi holds the Legacy Cup as he is surrounded by AmaZulu, Zululand District Municipality and SAFA officials

THE Zululand District Municipality (ZDM) has partnered with AmaZulu Football Club in launching the Prince Mangosuthu Legacy Cup to honour the district’s 88-year-old first citizen in the form of a pre-season soccer festival.

The launch was held on Saturday at a gala dinner at the Ulundi Garden Court Hotel.
Guests included Prince of KwaPhindangene Mangosuthu Buthelezi, ZDM mayor Inkosi Mzamo Buthelezi, SAFA Executive Members, members of the Royal household, PSL and NFD clubs.

Inkosi Mzamo Buthelezi said Amazulu has a long history with the District.

It was because of this close relationship that the District joins with AmaZulu to honour Prince Buthelezi.

Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi is the nephew of Usuthu founder, King Solomon ka Dinizulu ka Cetshwayo ka Mpande, who endorsed efforts to unify the Zulu nation through football.

AmaZulu’s home ground is named after his mother, Princess Magogo ka Dinizulu ka Cetshwayo kaMpande.

‘Tournaments of this nature are very useful to enhance tourism to the area as, apart from the fans who enjoy watching the games, they also visit Ulundi, which is not a very big town,’ said Prince Buthelezi.

Economic catalyst

AmaZulu General Manager, Lunga Sokhela said, ‘The area does need a catalyst in terms of economic development, and there’s nothing bigger than a major event of this nature.

‘How befitting that it can have a leader of this stature, uNdabezitha Prince Mangosuthu, and have his name associated to this wonderful project.’

The inaugural Prince Mangosuthu Legacy Cup will be played in July at the Ulundi Regional Sport Complex.

Other participating clubs will be confirmed leading up to the tournament.
