Online fraud alert

RICHARDS Bay police say there is a marked increase in cases of fraud involving purchases of goods over the internet or via telephone.

According to SAPS Communication Officer Captain Debbie Ferreira, several fraud cases were reported last weekend in which people purchasing vehicles deposited cash into the seller’s bank account, who thereafter could not be reached.

‘There have also been incidents where people purchased goods online, made the electronic payments, but never received the goods.

‘Fraud has increased at an alarming rate and we are urging customers to exercise caution when transacting.

‘ATM fraud also spiralled, with many customers reporting their bank cards had been cloned and money withdrawn from their accounts while the card was still in their possession,’ said
