Richards Bay educator makes her mark

Bay Primary School educator J Naicken is congratulated by Principal V Moodley after claiming third place in the National Teacher Awards last week

ZULULAND educator J Naicken of Bay Primary School featured in the Department of Basic Education’s National Teacher Awards last week, scooping third place in the ‘Excellence in Primary School Teaching’ category.

Naicken was congratulated at the prestigious awards ceremony held at Gallaher Estates Convention Centre in Johannesburg last Saturday.

After scooping first place in the district and provincial round in November, she went on to the national interview round where she competed against the country’s provincial finalists in January.

She received a trophy, certificate and prizes of a laptop and cellphone.

‘I am extremely grateful for this acknowledgement. I’m proud to be part of this noble profession and to have represented my school Bay Primary, district and our province.

‘A huge thank you to the district and provincial education officials, my family, Principal Mr V Moodley, fellow teachers and learners and my church for their encouragement and support,’ said Naicken.

In 2015 Naicken attained second position in the provincial round in the same category.

She has been teaching for 12 years and has a masters degree in education. She is driven to help improve literacy, create lifelong learners and seeing those learners excel.
