Bicycle security anti-crime patrols to return

The Community Safety Patrols were highly successful and extremely popular with all sectors of the public as they played a big role in fighting crime

CITY of uMhlathuze residents should soon enjoy a return of the highly successful bicycle security anti-crime watches.

Previously known as Community Safety Patrols, the service was provided as a joint venture between the municipality, industry, private security and SAPS.

It terminated in 2011 owing to a lack of funding, but an announcement on a new version of the project is imminent.

Teams of trained EPWP (Expanded Public Works Programme) youths will work under supervision of qualified security personnel as part of, and augmenting, the city’s crime prevention strategy.

‘The city is still fine-tuning the project to make it work better for the people, said Communications Manager Mdu Ncalane.

‘This includes plans to capacitate the project with personnel, as you may have seen some EPWP advertisements.

‘The city will indicate when the project is ready to be rolled out.’
