WATCH: What to do in a sinking car

DO you know what to do if your vehicle is sinking and you are trapped in it?

According to data collected by a Canadian researcher, an estimated 400 people die each year because their car becomes submerged during a crash.

A lot of people stuck in this situation end up doing the wrong thing the moment their car is immersed in water.

NSRI crew member, Norman Rautenbach, shared some insightful tips with the ZO on what you should do if you ever find yourself entrapped in a sinking vehicle.

‘As soon as you hit the water, the first thing you need to do is open a window before your vehicle is submerged.

‘If you have a vehicle with electric windows, you will need to work extremely fast before the electrics of the vehicle stop working as a result of the water.

‘In the event that you do not act quick enough and your vehicle is completely submerged, you will need to use something to smash the window open. The steel pole in the head rest of your car seats is usually a good tool.

‘The bottom line is that at some stage you are going to need to get out of your vehicle before the water gets up against the windows, and that’s really in the first 30 to 60 seconds,’ he told the ZO.
