PUPILS at Emkhayideni Technical High School in Mzingazi are now looking forward to their science lessons and cannot wait to make use of the microscopes recently donated to the school.

The Zululand Yacht Club (ZYC), in conjunction with Grantleigh, last year hosted a ‘music under the stars’ fund-raising evening.

The purpose of the event was to raise money for an educational donation to a high school in the area.

A total of R4 300 was raised and it was suggested by Musa Dlamini, who has a child at the school, that Jackie Smit, ZYC Vice Commodore and event organiser, spend the money on whatever equipment was needed at Emkhayideni Technical High School.

‘The school principal told me they desperately needed sanitary towels for the girls, but I really wanted to spend this money on something educational for the school,’ said Smit.

Microscopes for the science department were next on Principal Ntombi Ntshangase’s list and the funds raised covered the cost of four, as well as a microscope kit.

As a separate fund-raiser, Smit held a sanitary towel themed ladies night, for which the entry was a pack of sanitary towels, so the school’s sanitary towel needs could also be met.

In all, 98 packs of sanitary towels were collected and donated with the microscopes to the school.

‘We are very blessed with this donation,’ said Ntshangase at the handover ceremony last Wednesday.

‘As we are a technical school, equipment forms the basis of our pupils’ education, so we are very grateful for these microscopes.

‘The sanitary towels will also help the Grades 10, 11 and 12 girls whose families cannot afford to buy them’
