Mayor’s office runs out of space

City of uMhlathuze office bearers and officials proudly show off their ‘Back to Basics’ provincial awards

CITY of uMhlathuze Mayor Mdu Mhlongo can’t wait for the revamp of the Richards Bay Civic Centre foyer to happen, so that he can get some breathing space.

‘My office simply has no more space, owing to the numerous awards we have received over time.

‘The new reception area on the ground floor will have display cabinets able to showcase what we have achieved,’ he said at a recent Exco meeting where the latest success was announced.

The city won significant accolades at the recent provincial ‘Back to Basics’ municipal awards function.

These included ‘Most Credible IDP in KZN’ – for the fourth consecutive years, and ‘Best IDP KPA Basic Service and Infrastructure Provision’.

The five pillars of the Back to Basics programme are to:

• Put the people and their concerns first and to ensure constant contact with communities through effective public participation platforms.

• Create conditions for decent living by consistently delivering municipal services to the right quality and standards.

• Be well governed and demonstrate good governance and administration by cutting wastage, spending public monies prudently, hiring competent staff, ensuring transparency and accountability.

• Ensure sound financial management and accounting and prudently manage resources so as to sustainably deliver services and bring development to communities.

• Build and maintain sound institutional and administrative capabilities, administered and managed by dedicated and skilled personnel at all levels.
