Free sanitary towels for schoolgirls

GIRLS from poorer communities will no longer have to miss out on school because they cannot afford sanitary towels

The KZN Department of Education has rolled out its own initiative through which indigent girl learners from Grades 4 to 12 will receive sanitary towels on a monthly basis.

The news went viral on social media on Monday after a post was shared on Facebook, congratulating the department on the project.

A circular posted on the department’s website, dated 22 January, states that the project aims at reducing the dropout rate of girl learners, caused by missing out weeks of school because they cannot afford sanitary towels.

According to the statement the first four month supply was expected to be delivered to 2 992 schools.

Each learner will receive one pack per month and the supply will last up to April.

It is expected that the next delivery will commence in the next financial year should funds be available.
