District aims for greener economy

CLIMATE change will be at the top of the agenda at this year’s District Economic Development and SMME Fair.
The event themed ‘Towards a green economy’, will take place this Tuesday at the Umfolozi Casino Resort addressing the challenges of decarbonising every sector of the local economy.
‘There is strong scientific evidence for climate change and particularly its effects on African economies, which has driven the need towards the development of green and low carbon economies,’ said the uThungulu District Municipality.
‘The development of renewable energy is not only critical in terms of lowering greenhouse gas emissions, but forms the backbone of achieving provincial energy security and self-sufficiency.
‘It also improves access to energy among the poor and stimulates decent and sustainable job creation.’
The symposium will outline barriers hindering the implementation of clean energy and highlight why the provincial focus should be spread across renewable power generation, manufacturing and energy efficiency.
Among the objectives are, ‘understanding the green economy concept’, ‘creating access to markets for SMMEs’ and ‘to strengthen synergies between SMMEs and LED stakeholders’.
‘Delegates can be assured that participation in this dynamic event will allow them to have a better understanding of the green economy concept, including its related strategies and policies,’ said the municipality.
‘They will also be part of formulating a clear and detailed plan to implement projects and programmes related to green economy concept.’
