Arts building debacle on centre stage

THE long-standing problem of the unfinished uThungulu Arts Centre will come before the provincial legislature during the current sitting.
The Zululand Observer has reported extensively on the non-completion, as well as deterioration, vandalism and theft at the centre, situated opposite the uMhlathuze Regional Sports Complex in Veldenvlei.
Built by the Department of Arts & Culture on land worth around R7-million, donated by the City of uMhlathuze five years ago, the project has been a disaster from the start.
Built alongside a known wetland, an ‘inadequate original geotechnical report’ has been blamed for the problems on site.
The Democratic Alliance’s Ann McDonnell gave notice on Thursday she will call on MEC for Arts and Culture Ntombikayise Sibhidla-Saphetha to respond the following:
• Why is the centre not in use?
• What is being done to protect the centre?
• Is the contractor responsible for the damages caused in phase one (completed in 2012)?
McDonnell will also call on the House to note the land ownership is under scrutiny, and about R10-million has been spent on the centre to date.
