CONVICTED rapist Thabani Magwaza (19) was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment in the eShowe Regional Court last week for raping his 11-year-old niece.

According to uThungulu Cluster police spokesperson Captain Mbongeni Mdlalose, the young girl went to bed at her family home near Melmoth and found her uncle already in the room.

‘He told her that if she screamed she would be arrested. Thereafter he raped her,’ said Capt Mdlalose.

The girls’ grandmother came into the room during the act.

She immediately called for assistance from neighbours who, together with local Community Policing Forum members, managed to catch the suspect and hand him over to the eShowe Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit.

• In the same court a 17-year-old teen was sentenced to eight years in prison after he was found guilty of raping an eight-year-old girl.

Captain Mdlalose said the girl’s father noticed his daughter was behaving strangely in May last year.

‘Questioned by the mother, the child eventually told her how she had been repeatedly raped by a goat herdboy while visiting the mother’s home near Melmoth.’

A case of rape was opened and the eShowe Family Violence, Child Portection and Sexual Offences unit investigated, swiftly bringing about the arrest of the teen.
