Long sentence for Mzingazi rapist

ANOTHER rapist is off the streets after a Mzingazi man was on Monday sentenced to almost three decades behind bars in the Richards Bay Regional Court.

Sphamandla Skhumbuzo Ntuli (35) will spend the next 28 years behind bars for rape, robbery and escaping from custody.

The crimes were committed in 2011 in Mzingazi.

According to police reports, Ntuli accosted his rape victim and her boyfriend, threatening the boyfriend and chasing him away with a knife.

He then grabbed the then 20-year-old young woman and took her to a nearby bush where he raped her.

He also robbed her of her cellphone and other belongings.

After the victim reported the incident to local police, the case was transferred to the Empangeni Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit.

Ntuli was arrested two years later and kept in custody for the duration of his trial.

At the time of his first court appearance, Ntuli attempted to escape, but was soon rearrested.

A charge of escaping from lawful custody was added.

Ntuli was on Monday found guilty and sentenced to 25 years for rape and robbery, and a further three years for escaping.
