Records tumble at Zululand Inter-School Athletics League

Felixton College's Kayla Jansen bettered two records

FIVE records were bettered at the first round of the Zululand Inter-School Athletics League held at Felixton College last week, where seven schools battled it out on the track.

Round two will be hosted by Richards Bay High School on Tuesday, 22 August.

Grantleigh’s Wandile Gumede bettered the boys U16 100m and 200m records when he crossed the line in 11.44sec (old record 11.59sec) and 23.85sec (24.37sec) respectively.

Felixton College’s Kayla Jansen improved the girls U16 400m and 800m records after striding home in 1.09.00 (1.13.53) and 2.55.28 (3.04.60).

Team-mate Sne Mzimela bettered the girls U16 200m record after sprinting home in 28.69sec (29.69).

When all the dust had settled and the points added up, Felixton College finished on top with 173 points, followed by Richards Bay High (162) and Grantleigh (132).

St Catherine’s School snatched fourth spot on 93 points, followed by eShowe High School on 86 points, Richards Bay Christian School on 70 points and Sunnydale Secondary School on 51 points.

Richards Bay Christian School’s Samantha Dreyer and Richards Bay High School’s Lwethu Zondi were named the Junior Victrix and Victor Ludorum, with St Catherine’s speedster Sarah Giles and Grantleigh’s Wandile Gumede claiming the Senior Victrix and Victor Ludorum awards.

U15 Girls – Samantha Dreyer (Richards Bay Christian School).

U15 Boys – Lwethu Zondi (Richards Bay High School).

U16 Girls – Kayla Jansen (Felixton College).

U16 Boys – Wandile Gumede (Grantleigh).

U17 Girls – Sarah Giles (St Catherine’s).

U17 Boys – Lusanda Jiyane (Richards Bay High School).
