WHILE visiting his old ‘stomping ground’, well-known South African actor Sboniso Nxumalo recently visited the ZO office in Richards Bay to tell us about his future plans.

Since 2010 Sboniso has been gracing our television screens with his presence in various TV shows, the best known one being Isithembiso, a telenovela screened on Mzansi Magic.

In this show, Sboniso played the starring role of Oscar, Zamani’s maternal uncle and security guard at Santa Barbara.

In 2014, Sboniso also played a dangerous taxi owner with an attitude, Brasakes, in Taxi Cheese Boy, which was aired on Mzansi Magic’s Lokshin Bioskop channel.

‘The taxi driver character that I played is nothing like my real life personality,’ said Sboniso.

‘Brasakes has a bad attitude and is very dangerous, and I am nothing like that in real life.’

Taking a lead from his ‘Oscar’ character, the security guard in Isithembiso, Sboniso plans to start his own security company in Johannesburg in the near future.

‘I have no plans to leave the TV industry just yet but I am thinking ahead to when my acting career comes to an end,’ he said.

Although I would also like to one day open my own production company to try give other budding actors from the rural areas a chance at the type of success, I am enjoying the acting.

Born and bred in Empangeni, Sboniso attended Old Mill High School but did not matriculate.

‘When I was younger, my friends and I would make up short skits and act them out to our other friends.

‘It was then that I found out how much I loved acting and that I might be good enough to one day earn a living from it.’

Now based in Johannesburg, Sboniso has not forgotten his humble roots and comes home whenever he can.

‘I want to help more youngsters from rural areas make something of themselves and if I can do that by helping pave their way in the acting world, then so be it.’
