Three arrests in rhino poaching crackdown

Weapons, including an axe, were confiscated when the suspects' vehicle was searched

THREE suspected rhino poachers are scheduled to appear at Hluhluwe Magistrate’s Court today (Monday) after they were arrested on Friday and their weapons confiscated.

An intelligence-driven operation led SAPS members tasked with combating rhino poaching to a white Toyota double cab in the Mgwanwini area near Hluhluwe.

On searching the vehicle, the members found a high calibre hunting rifle with silencer and ammunition, and an axe.

The 44-year-old driver and his 24- and 28-year-old passengers were arrested.

The trio will appear on charges of unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.

This arrest comes hot on the heels of the slaughter of six white rhino in Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park (HiP) just last weekend.

Five rounds of ammunition was confiscated, along with the high calibre hunting rifle and axe
