WRITING since the age of 16, Nokuthula Mazibuko from Richards Bay turns to her pen when facing life’s difficulties.

With numerous poems under her belt, Nokuthula writes about her emotions and life experiences, as well as what she sees in the world around her.

A recent poem entitled Rise up youth of the city deals with aspects of modern living which have detached people from society, and society from the natural world.

It is about how society has given in to xenophobia and how the children of today will parent the children of tomorrow.

It is up to the youth to take the lead and help turn their world around.

Having completed her school career at Empangeni’s Old Mill High School, Nokuthula now works as an assistant in the construction industry.

However, it is her passion to write for a living, both poetry and scripts, get into publishing and also into documentary filming.

‘Because I write about what is going on in the world around me, I really want to use my writing to make a difference in the world,’ said Nokuthula.

‘We were put on this earth to love, not to hate, and I want to make it my life’s work to raise awareness about the many ills of society, such as domestic abuse, murder and kidnapping of children.’

Nokuthula is also involved in bettering her community through helping people budget and get themselves out of debt.

‘When people work to bring themselves out of debt and other bad situations, it is then that they can start contributing to a better society.

‘It is my goal to try help people rise above their poverty and debt enslavement and rid our communities of poverty and the cycle of crime that goes with it.’
