Two dead and multiple rescued after floods

SAPS Search and Rescue and Emergency Services in the region were inundated with urgent requests for help this week following the heavy rains and raging winds which swept across Zululand, leaving several people caught in flash floods and needing attention.

According to reports, SAPS Search and Rescue received eight calls for help within a space of three hours on Sunday.

In uMhlathuze, three people were rescued after a car was washed away in the Ntuze River.

Most reports of near drownings occurred in the Mfolozi area.

In Nkayiyane Road 17 people were rescued from a bus and one person from a light motor vehicle when the vehicles were caught up in flash floods.

In Evumamanzi two brothers and another male occupant of a taxi were rescued.

In Mbabe six people were rescued from the back of an Isuzu bakkie when they became caught up in a flash flood.

SAPS Search and Rescue made use of rescue craft (Ark) as well as rope systems to ferry the occupants to safety.

The eldest of the victims was a 78-year-old female.
