Impressive medal haul at SA champs

Courtney Kleiner, Kayla Jansen, Junior Moore and Alan Smith picked up bronze in the mixed 13-16 years 4x50m medley relay event

FISH Eagle Swimming Club torpedoes’ hard work and determination paid off when scooping a vast range of medals at the South African Regional Level 2 and 3 Age Group Championship galas held in Sasolburg.

Club swimmers Amy Carey, Jack Osborne, Tasha du Toit and Daniel Triggiani qualified for the level 3 champs which was held on 23 and 24 March.

The swimmers, who are coached by Francois du Toit and Sonja van Ryswyk, achieved the following results: Carey won silver in the girls U13 50m freestyle, Osborne reached three finals in the boys U14 age group, Du Toit reached six finals in the girls U16 category and Triggiani won bronze in the boys 15-18 50m and 100m freestyle events.

Eleven club swimmers qualified for the level 2 championships,namely Rebecca du Toit, Courtney Kleiner, Sumarie Roodt, Alicia Smit, Kayla Wafer, Teaghan Wafer, Henk Jansen, Kayla Jansen, Saskia Ludick, Junior Moore and Alan Smith (coached by Linda Joubert, Du Toit and Van Ryswyk).

Henk Jansen scooped two bronze medals in the boys U12 100m backstroke and 100m butterfly events, with Kleiner snatching one gold (girls 13-16 years 4x50m freestyle relay) and one bronze medal (mixed 13-16 years 4x50m medley relay).

Teaghan Wafer bagged gold in the girls U13 50m butterfly and silver in the girls U13 50m freestyle events, with fellow club mate Alan Smith bringing home four gold (boys U14 200m individual medley, 200m freestyle, 200m backstroke and mixed 13-16 years 4x50m freestyle relay)and one bronze medal (mixed 13-16 years 4x50m medley relay).

Alicia Smit won three silver medals in the girls U14 50m breaststroke, 100m breaststroke and girls 13-16 years 4x50m medley relay events, with Kayla Wafer taking gold in the girls 13-16 years 4x50m freestyle relay event.

Rebecca du Toit collected two gold (girls 13-16 years 4x50m freestyle relay and mixed 13-16 years 4x50m freestyle relay) and one silver (girls 13-16 years 4x50m medley relay) medals for her efforts.

Kayla Jansen took gold in the girls 13-16 years 4x50m freestyle relay and mixed 4x50m freestyle relays, silver in the girls 13-16 years 4x50m medley relay and two bronze medals in the girls 200m breaststroke and mixed 13-16 years 4x50m medley relays.

Ludick bagged gold in the girls U15 100m butterfly and silver in the girls U13 50m butterfly races, with Sumarie Roodt picking up silver in the girls 13-16 years 4x50m medley relay.

Moore brought home two gold (boys 16 & Over 50m freestyle and mixed 13-16 4x50m freestyle relay) and two bronze (boys 16 & Over 50m butterfly and mixed 13-16 years 4x50m medley relay) medals.

Prize giving and registration

The prize giving ceremony will take place after the AGM on Saturday, 22 April at the Richards Bay Yacht Club at 4pm.

Registration for the 2017/2018 swim season will open on 1 May.

Swimmers will train through winter and host the Fish Eagle 1000m swim on 22 and 23 September at the Empangeni Municipal swimming pool.
