22-year-old Meerensee female jogger mugged in broad daylight

A YOUNG woman was moderately injured but severely shaken on Wednesday when she was mugged while jogging on Davidson Lane in Meerensee.

The incident occurred at about 1.30pm when the 22-year-old victim was approached by two men who stole her cell phone.

Having witnessed the incident, a taxi driver grabbed one of the two suspects and held him until Meerensee CPF (Community Policing Forum) patrollers arrived on scene.

He also retrieved the woman’s cell phone.

The second suspect fled the scene.

Once on scene, CPF patrollers apprehended the held suspect and notified SAPS.

Patrollers also tended to the victim’s cuts and bruises and called an ambulance.

CPF patroller Corrie Pretorius has urged joggers to be very aware of jogging with headphones and cell phones, as these make them targets of unsavoury characters.

Richards Bay SAPS Communications Officer Debbie Ferreira confirmed the arrest and that the suspect is in police custody, charged with robbery.
